Sally and I were sitting in the theatre watching a new film when the very spot where we met came onto the screen, the top of the stairwell just outside the refectory at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. We noisily exclaimed to the people around us, “That’s where we met!” Since that day watching a movie, we have had many other experiences of seeing scenes in movies and TV shows that feature Union in New York. I will get around to sharing the movie that has the scene of the spot where we were introduced to one another. Also in a later post, I’ll share the story of how we met.
But for now, here is a film from 2001, A Beautiful Mind starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. It is the story of Nobel Laureate in Economics, John Nash, who is a brilliant mathematician but also suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. One of the outdoor scenes where he is trying to confront his demons is supposedly at Princeton University but in reality is shot at Union. In the film there are a few other scenes that are also shot at Union, like the one where John is invited into a classroom and he quips that it is the first time he has attended a class.
